Virgin Mobile broadband has a wide coverage throughout Australia as it uses the Optus 3G network. You have a choice of post-paid and pre-paid plans with low start plans which can also be coupled with home phones to save money.
There are three plans in this category, 1 GB, 3 GB and 5 GB per month. You can bring your own modem to the package or pay extra per month for a USB modem or a WiFi modem. If you decide to purchase a modem you can get up to 3 months free on any plan.
You will be required to sign up for a 24 month package to take advantage of the special offers.
Prepaid plans on Virgin mode while broadband and allow you to 1 GB of data with expiry of 30 days. The latest WiFi modem, which you can purchase upfront, operates with a 15 m range and can connect to up to 3 devices at one time. You can recharge these in the same way as you would a prepaid mobile phone.
Recharge vouchers are available from 500 MB up to 10 GB. The larger the data limit the longer the time frame over which they will last. The 500 MB voucher will last 30 days while the 10 GB voucher will last for a year.
With a package deal from Virgin you can make unlimited calls to standard numbers in Australia using the wireless service. Coupled with this you’ll get a minimum of 4 GB of data broadband Internet every month with no excess usage charges.
A home modem is included with a built-in WiFi which connects easily to the Optus 3G network. You also have a 30 day guarantee which is effectively a cooling off period, meaning that if you are not happy at that stage you can terminate your arrangement. If you decide to leave after the cooling off period there is an exit fee of $15 every month you have left on your contract.
As the modem is provided by Virgin, it remains their property and must be returned at the end of your contract.
Remember that the home phone provided by Virgin is a VoIP service, which means that if you have a need for a fax machine at home you will need a separate line for that purpose. The VoIP service is operated directly over the Internet so your phone will not have a dial tone.
Although you will not be charged for access data usage the speed will be limited to 128 kb per second ones who have used up your monthly allowance. On a 4 GB plan however, if your usage exceeds 4.25 GB of data, your service will be unavailable until the first day of your next usage period unless you purchase a top up.
If you are an avid user of peer-to-peer networks then you should be aware that Virgin will limit your connection speed to 32 kb per second, a virtual snail’s pace.
Uploads and downloads are counted in the data limit.
